What it is

The Varian 2300C/D is a medical linear accelerator used for external-beam radiation therapy. The 2300C/D belongs to the Varian Clinac 2100C/2100CD generation of linear accelerators. The Clinac 2100C/2100CD generation was manufactured from 1987 through 2007. The machine uses a klystron as its microwave power source. The generation offers photon energy configurations of 6 MV and 10/15/18/25 MV. The generation also provides electron beam capability. A Silhouette option for smaller treatment-room layouts was available for the family.[1]

How it works

The Clinac 2100C/2100CD generation, which includes the 2300C/D, offers photon beam configurations of 6 MV and 10/15/18/25 MV. The maximum photon dose rate of the generation is 600 MU/min. The system provides electron beam therapy at a maximum electron dose rate of 1000 MU/min. Beam shaping options include an 80-leaf multi-leaf collimator for 40 x 40 cm fields and a 120-leaf multi-leaf collimator. In the 120-leaf version, the central 20 cm of the field uses 5 mm leaves, and the outer 20 cm of the field uses 10 mm leaves. Electronic portal imaging options for the generation include LC250, aS500, and aS1000 devices, available as optional equipment. Couch options for the generation include Exact ETR, with the Exact couch available as an optional configuration.[1]

Applications

The Clinac 2100C/2100CD generation, which includes the 2300C/D, supports three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy are optional capabilities for the generation. Stereotactic delivery uses optional cones or a mini multi-leaf collimator. Image-guided radiation therapy is possible with the optional On-Board Imager kilovoltage imaging system. Cone-beam computed tomography is available only when the On-Board Imager is fitted. Volumetric-modulated arc therapy is also available only when the On-Board Imager is fitted.[1]

Frequently asked questions

What photon energies are available on the 2300C/D?

The Clinac 2100C/2100CD generation, which includes the 2300C/D, offers photon energy configurations of 6 MV and 10/15/18/25 MV.[1]

What is the maximum photon dose rate?

The maximum photon dose rate of the generation is 600 MU/min.[1]

Does the machine deliver electron beams?

The 2300C/D family provides electron beam therapy. The maximum electron dose rate is 1000 MU/min.[1]

Which multi-leaf collimator options are offered?

The generation offers an 80-leaf multi-leaf collimator for 40 x 40 cm fields and a 120-leaf multi-leaf collimator. The 120-leaf design uses 5 mm leaves across the central 20 cm of the field and 10 mm leaves across the outer 20 cm.[1]
