Single-sided lapping and polishing machines work one face of a part against a rotating plate with abrasive supplied at the interface. Ring-type machines commonly use conditioning rings and workholders to control motion across the plate while maintaining flatness and surface finish.

The Model 72 has four conditioning rings with roller yoke and bearing assemblies for in-process plate flatness control. The machine has a high torque drive unit with a 15 kW and 20 hp motor and reduction gearbox. The basis configuration includes a high density cast iron segmented serrated lapping plate, four high density cast iron serrated conditioning rings, four blank workholder discs, a free standing abrasive system with pump and driven stirrer tank with multiple point distribution, an operator panel with start and stop controls and a multiple range digital process timer, and a waste bucket. Optional features include electronic variable speed drive, water cooling, a peristaltic pump, optional plates, PLC, and a diamond unit.^[2]

Single-sided lapping and polishing tools are generally used after slicing, grinding, or other stock-removal steps when a part needs flatter geometry, a more controlled surface, or preparation for a later finishing step. Such machines are commonly placed before fine polishing, cleaning, inspection, bonding, coating, or assembly operations that depend on planar surfaces.

The Model 72 is intended for flat polishing and lapping work on planar surfaces. The machine supports free abrasive slurry processing and can be fitted with a diamond slurry dispensing system. The product configuration includes blank workholder discs and conditioning rings for ring-based processing on the plate surface.^[2][1]
