A patterning process that uses light to transfer a geometric design from a photomask onto a light-sensitive photoresist coated on the wafer. Exposed (or unexposed) resist is then developed away, leaving a pattern that masks subsequent etch or implant steps. Photolithography defines the smallest features a fab can print and is typically the most expensive step sequence in wafer processing.
